Iodosorb* ointment is a sterile formulation of cadexomer iodine. When applied to the wound, Iodosorb cleans it by absorbing fluids, removing exudate, pus and debris and forming a gel over the wound surface. As the ointment swells, iodine is released, killing bacteria in the wound.

Features

  • Iodosorb ointment contains 50% cadexomer iodine and 50% ointment base.
  • Iodosorb changes colour from brown to yellow when the dressing requires changing.

Benefits

  • Helps promote wound healing
  • Effectively removes pus and debris
  • Helps promote a clean wound-healing environment
  • Gel formed over the wound helps to facilitate moist healing
  • Accelerated healing rates can lead to earlier patient discharges

Patient comfort

  • Non-adherent to wounds, reducing trauma at dressing changes and protecting delicate epithelium.
  • Cadexomer iodine absorbs 6 to 8 times its own weight in fluid, limiting the number of dressing changes required.
  • Helps reduce the odour associated with heavily contaminated wounds.

Contraindications / Precautions

  • Should not be used in patients with known or suspected iodine sensitivity, Hashimoto's thyroiditis or prior history of Graves Disease, or in the case of non-toxic nodular goitre.
  • Patients with a past history of any thyroid disorder are more susceptible to alteration in thyroid metabolism with chronic Iodosorb therapy.
  • Iodine may be absorbed systemically especially when large wounds are treated.
  • In endemic goitre, there have been isolated reports of hyperthyroidism associated with Iodosorb.
  • Iodine may potentially interact with lithium, sulphafurazoles and sulphonylureas therefore administration is not recommended.
  • Should not be used for pregnant or lactating women.
  • The adherent crust may form when the dressing is changed with significant frequency.
